Our flagship venue was transformed into a supervillain’s decadent nightclub for the production of The Batman. The location of the film’s most riveting action scenes, The Iceberg Lounge captures the unique atmosphere of the former printing factory in scenes featuring Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz and Colin Farrell.
Legendary menswear designer Raf Simons chose Printworks to stage his first ever show in the UK. The presentation took aim at the hierarchies and formality of fashion week, with a boldly minimal collection that sang in the raw aesthetics of the former printing factory.
BBC Proms, the original music for the masses, came to Printworks this year with an operatic spectacular conceived by countertenor Anthony Roth Constanzo. He combined baroque masterpieces by Handel with a series of works by Philip Glass, inviting international artists of all forms to collaborate in this unique event.
Design London returned to Magazine on 20–23 September for a bumper year of design showcases, talks and installations. Here, we identify some of the festival’s key themes and most important messages.
The most exciting thing about our spaces is what happens in them
In the 1960s, New Century Hall hosted Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, The Bee Gees and Tina Turner. In the 1980s, it was adopted by the Madchester scene, fostering such homegrown talent as The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays. Truly Manchester music royalty, the space has been restored and reimagined for a new generation of cultural makers and musicians.
